The bishop of the Algarve wrote the preface to the book «Casa de Santa Isabel 1919 – 2019, one hundred years of well-doing – a century of Christian living», by journalist João Leal, about the Catholic institution that welcomes minors at risk female, in Faro.

D. Manuel Quintas points out that each of the pages of the new publication guides the reader “on this already long and fruitful path” and introduces the “art of 'well-doing' of successive generations, a reflection of the Farense society of each time” , reported the newspaper “Folha do Domingo”, this Thursday.

For the Bishop of Algarve, the book «Casa de Santa Isabel 1919 – 2019, one hundred years of well-doing – a century of Christian living» is an “opportune initiative” to promote the collection and publication of these “memories”, leaving to the future this rich heritage”.

The IPSS management recalls, in the presentation of the new book, that the Casa de Santa Isabel, in Faro, was founded to “respond to a serious humanitarian and socio-economic crisis”, as a result of the outbreak called 'Pneumonic Flu' that “affected the Algarve population”.

“The pandemic at that time caused high mortality rates in the region, leaving many children orphans and in precarious conditions, especially the female ones. It was for these that the Casa de Santa Isabel was built in the city of Faro, initially called Asilo de Santa Isabel”, he adds.

The institution was created by the action of the then bishop of the Algarve, D. António Barbosa Leão, and a group of four women linked to the Franciscan Third Order, in 1919, in a space attached to the church and convent of São Francisco, provided by the Franciscans.

The direction of Casa de Santa Isabel also explains that this book comes from the celebration of the centenary of the institution, which “had its high point on July 4, 2019, and included a lecture by Professor João Leal”, a journalist who wrote «Casa de Santa Isabel 1919 – 2019, one hundred years of doing good – a century of Christian living».

The newspaper «Folha do Domingo», of the Diocese of the Algarve, informs that the private institution of social solidarity of an associative nature, welcomes about 160 children and young people, from three to 18 years old, has facilities for the Home for Children and Youth and for Day Care and Kindergarten, and a technical staff of around 35 employees.

Casa de Santa Isabel was distinguished by the Municipality of Faro, with the Medal of Municipal Merit – gold degree, in 2005.
