European funds “injected” 48 million into the Algarve economy in 2021

According to CCDR Algarve, this was «the best year of execution since the beginning of the 2014-2020 Multiannual Financial Framework»

The Algarve Regional Operational Program increased execution by 15,3% in 2021, “injecting” around 48,7 million euros of European funds into the regional economy, this being «the best year of execution since the beginning of the Multiannual Financial Framework 2014-2020», announced this Monday, 3 January, the Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR) of the Algarve.

According to CCDR Algarve, «the execution rate of the Algarve Operational Program (PO Algarve) reached 57,4% at the end of 2021 (it was 42,1% on 1 January of last year), in what has been until now the best year in its execution'.

The improvement in execution was accompanied by "a strong boost in the commitment rate", which rose from 89,3% at the beginning of 2021 to 109,0%, reflecting "the acceleration in the implementation of the Regional Operational Programme", explains the CCDR Algarve.

For these results, “the collaboration and commitment of all beneficiaries, municipalities, universities and companies, third sector entities, deconcentrated public administration entities, supported by the technical structures of the Management Authority, AMAL – Intermunicipal Community of the Algarve, the Local Action Groups (GAL) and intermediary organizations supporting companies and employment and social inclusion.

"Despite all the efforts made and the network work carried out, with monthly monitoring throughout the year, the execution was 96% of the target foreseen for 2021 and the execution rate 2,6% below the initially projected" .

CCDR Algarve underlines “the reinforcement of business investment in productive innovation, in qualified employment, in urban rehabilitation, cultural heritage and facilities, training and administrative modernization, axes which, at the end of 2021, reached an execution rate of over 60% on the program for the period 2014-2020, as well as the significant increase in investment in science and research».

In 2022, the Regional Operational Program Management Authority aims to "increase the execution rate by another 20 to 22 percentage points" with the objective of "reaching 78% to 80% of the execution rate by the end of the year, increasing efficiency in its execution”, underlines José Apolinário, president of CCDR Algarve and of the Board of Directors of the Management Authority of the PO Algarve.

It also aims to reinforce «investment in productive innovation and competitiveness, in education, school infrastructure and culture, science and innovation, employment, entrepreneurship and social innovation, smooth mobility, energy efficiency and renewable energies, always within a framework of rigor and compliance audit and control rules in the application of European funds managed in the region”, he explains.

The PO Algarve is headed by a Board of Directors chaired by José Apolinário, with two members, the chairman of AMAL António Pina, nominated by ANMP – National Association of Portuguese Municipalities, and another nominated by the Government.
