São Brás de Alportel installs 30 nest boxes in the municipality

São Brás de Alportel installed 30 nest boxes to «stimulate the establishment of more birds in urban areas in the municipality», as a result of a protocol signed between the City Council and the Vita Nativa association. team responsible again in the field to check the nesting rate.

The initiative, part of the “Local Housing for Birds” project, the winning idea of ​​the Portugal 2018 Participatory Budget, aims to “promote bird diversity throughout the Algarve region and includes the provision and installation of two thousand nest boxes for small bird species birds, such as titmice, and for medium-sized birds of prey, such as the common kestrel, the Barn Owl and the Galician Owl», says the São Brasense municipality.

«In addition to encouraging the establishment of more birds», the project also aims to «foster interest and provide society with more direct contact with birds, as well as raising awareness of the important role they play in the control of biological pests, such as the the case of the pine larch”.

Bearing in mind the benefits for the community, for the environment and for the preservation of the municipality's natural heritage and biodiversity, the municipality of São Brás de Alportel "is committed to implementing this project" which has already allowed the installation of nest boxes in Jardim da Verbena, in schools in the municipality, in Jardim Carrera Viegas and in Fonte Férrea.

The project and its objectives «did not go unnoticed by the municipal executive, who joined the initiative, which is in full harmony with the Municipal Strategy in the environmental area, as well as a contribution to the objectives outlined by the National Strategy for the Conservation of Nature and Biodiversity for 2030 , and is in line with the European Ecological Pact», says the City Council.

The “Local Housing for Birds” also meets the “Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda”, and counts on the participation of the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests (ICNF), represented by the Regional Directorate for the Conservation of Nature and Forests of the Algarve.
