“The Future of Democracy in Europe” will be debated at CCDR Algarve

The conference “The Future of Democracy in Europe”, as part of a cycle of national events, will take place this Friday, December 10, at 11:00 am, at the Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR) of the Algarve, in Faro.

"Democracy in the European Union and its countries faces challenges such as the rise of extremism, misinformation and a perception of distance between people and their elected representatives", says the European Parliament office in Portugal...

"Contributing to European democracy means making your voice heard, not only by participating in European elections, where citizens directly elect MEPs every five years, but also with active citizenship outside electoral periods."

The debate “should involve citizens from all walks of life and geographical locations, with young people playing a central role in defining the future of the European project”.

National, regional and local authorities, as well as civil society and other organizations are also invited to participate in this debate, which is being broadcast. online, will allow remote intervention by video or in writing.

The opening event will feature the intervention of José Apolinário, president of the CCDR Algarve, and Pedro Valente da Silva, head of the European Parliament's office in Portugal. It will be moderated by journalist Daniela Ferreira Pinto, from RTP.

The conference will feature the participation of the Member of the European Parliament, Carlos Zorrinho, the Vice President of the European Commission, Margaritis Schinas, the Secretary of State for European Affairs, Ana Paula Zacarias, the Member of the Assembly of the Republic, Alma Rivera, and representatives of civil society, ambassador schools of the European Parliament and the Unidos.eu community.

The “Conference on the Future of Europe” is a consultative process for European citizens, taking place across the continent, so that, by giving citizens a voice on matters that matter to them, the debate is refocused on Europe's challenges and priorities.

This national event serves as a starting point for a broader program in the city of Faro, organized by the European Parliament in Portugal.

Also on this day, at 19:30 pm, the film “Mais uma Rodada”, by Thomas Vinterberg, nominated LUX – Audience Award, will be screened at Forum Algarve. Admission is free, but subject to room capacity.
