'Dead or sick' trees that are uprooted from the Mata do Liceu will be replaced

camera of Faro came to provide clarification in the "follow-up of various publications and opinions"

The 'dead or diseased' trees that will be felled during the contract to requalify the Mata do Liceu, in Faro, will be replaced by new ones, announced today the Farense Chamber.

The autarchy went public “to provide a set of clarifications regarding the contract to refurbish the Mata do Liceu”, in the “follow-up of several publications and opinions” that were published about the work, which is already in progress.

In October, the Glocal association Faro had already called for the maintenance of as many trees as possible., claiming that the project foresees that the forest will have 168 less trees.

Today, the Chamber of Faro he assured that the project "has the opinion of the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests" and "respects the best intervention practices and all tree felling is justified, in particular for reasons of safety of its users, including children and young people" .

With regard to the ICNF opinion, it was requested "taking into account the evident signs of degradation of this iconic space in the city and anticipating the start of the project".

The report that was issued by the entity «attests to the poor phytosanitary conditions of the space, noting that the vulnerability of existing species (mostly pine, cypress, eucalyptus and casuarinas) may be the result of a combined effect of overpopulation, soil compaction (trampling) and water deficit (upland without irrigation)», describes the Chamber of Faro.

In the same opinion, «the ICNF recommends, among other actions, the cutting down of “dead and diseased trees”, “rejuvenating pruning”, and “replacement of trees”».

In other words, the position of the ICNF «thus confirmed the diagnosis that had already been made by the responsible technical team, which considered that the phytosanitary issues and the risk of imminent fall of branches or trees - in an area of intense pedestrian circulation and in the vicinity of several school establishments – would justify the felling and pruning of some specimens of dead or diseased trees».

"It is important, however, to clarify that, according to the project and in accordance with the ICNF suggestions, new trees will be planted to replace the felled ones, some of which are indigenous and others of faster growth but with high resistance to pests", assured the autarchy.

«In this context, there will be a strong investment in broadleaved trees, in order to increase the deposition of organic matter in the soil. The grove will also be complemented with plantations at the shrub and sub-shrub level that will reduce the trampling of space outside the tracks and will benefit from the soil conditions", he added.

These options of the project that is already being implemented «are adequate» and «the ongoing intervention will significantly improve that important green space in the city, namely in terms of the well-being and safety of its users, by introducing new anchor spaces, as an area street workout or arborism, in addition to the recreation of other existing spaces, such as the playground, the geriatric park or the amphitheater».
