16 Algarve municipalities cancel New Year's Eve in "super consensual" decision

"There could be fireworks" in areas where there is not a "great gathering of people"

It's official: there will be no end-of-year shows in the 16 municipalities of the Algarve. The “super consensual” decision was taken this Friday, December 3rd, at a meeting of AMAL – Algarve Intermunicipal Community.

In statements to the Sul Informação, the president António Pina explained that, even so, "there could be fireworks" in areas where there is not a "great agglutination of people".

As for the shows, in traditional places like Albufeira or Quarteira, it would be “impossible to control the gatherings” of people, at a time when the number of Covid-19 cases has been increasing.

This was, moreover, a decision that was already expected, after Albufeira and Faro have communicated, even before the AMAL meeting, the cancellation of the end-of-year festivities.

In statements to our newspaper, António Pina asked the Algarve and tourists to "limit their social life to the family nucleus or a small group of friends" in this festive season.

Asked about the possible consequences for tourism and for the region's economy due to this cancellation, the AMAL president considered that "the gap would be greater if we were not careful when we should."
