Thousands of people took part in an unlucky Algarve Grand Prix for Miguel Oliveira

Portuguese pilot was “harvested” by Iker Lecuona and did not finish the race

Thousands of people were this Sunday at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, to watch the Algarve Grand Prix on a motorcycle GP, which ended with the abandonment of the Portuguese Miguel Oliveira, caught “by table” by Iker Lecuona, and with a victory by Francesco Bagnaia.

The Portuguese's fall, with two laps to go and when he was in 10th place – he started from 17th on the grid -, was a bucket of cold water for the Portuguese fans.

Up front, Bagnaia, as well as Joan Mir and Jack Miller, 2nd and 3rd ranked, celebrated the ascent to the podium, but the championship, this one, was already handed over to Fábio Quartarato, who also withdrew from the race due to a fall .

Before the main race, in Moto3, the Spaniard Pedro Acosta (Red Bull KTM Ajo) was crowned world champion, thus becoming the first rookie to win this title since 1990 (Loris Capirossi). On the podium were Italians Andrea Migno (Rivacold Snipers Team) and Niccolò Antonelli (Avintia VR46 Academy).

“The race was always very close between Foggia and Acosta, but Binder collided with Foggia on the final lap, inevitably leading Acosta to the big win and the title of rockie of the Year”, according to the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve.

In the premier event, Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) «led the race firmly, although Joan Mir (Team SUZUKI ECSTAR) was always in the rear, waiting for an opportunity to win, however the efforts were in vain, as Bagnaia trifed'.

Miguel Oliveira «started the race surprisingly determined and convinced to do whatever it took to succeed, he quickly climbed seven positions on the grid, however, one lap from the end he was hit by Iker Lecuona and abandoned the stretcher race, he was later seen by the doctors and is well».

In the Moto2 category, teammates Remy Gardner and Raul Fernandez (Red bull KTM Ajo) were the protagonists of a fierce fight, with Gardner emerging victorious, followed by Fernandez and Sam Lowes (Elf Marc VDS Racing Team).

Drivers and teams follow their way to Valencia where they will face each other in the last stage of the championship and where the title of Moto2 world champion will be awarded.

According to the provisional schedule announced by Dorna, in April 2022, «the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve will once again open its doors to receive a Motorcycling Grand Prix for the 18th time in Portugal».
