GEOTA promotes the third debate of the cycle of “Round Tables around the Earth” on the future availability of water for agriculture in Portugal

Eugénio Sequeira, president of the General Assembly of the League for the Protection of Nature, Mário de Carvalho, professor at the University of Évora, José Pedro Salema, president of EDIA, Amílcar Duarte, professor at the University of Algarve, Alfredo Sendim, owner of Montado do Freixo do Meio, and Jorge Ferreira, founder of Agro-Sanus are the speakers of the third debate of the cycle of “Round Tables around the Earth” on the future of water availability for agriculture in Portugal, which will take place this Monday, day 29.

This initiative is promoted by GEOTA, Study Group on Spatial Planning and Environment. The debate, which can watch online by clicking here, is intended to discuss issues related to the future availability of water, its value and real cost, taking into account the agriculture currently practiced in Portugal.

“With global challenges, such as climate change, causing impacts on economic activities and, in particular, on agriculture, it is urgent to discuss the availability of water in the medium and long term in our country and the type of crops most appropriate for each territory. In the last decade, Portugal has witnessed an accelerated transition to intensive irrigation crops at the expense of rainfed crops, which makes reflection on the use of water, the protection of biodiversity, soil and landscape unavoidable.” explains João Dias Coelho, president of GEOTA.

“Is intensive agriculture sustainable in the medium long term?”, “what is the cost of water incorporated in the food we eat and export?” or “what are the impacts on soil quality and biodiversity with this type of agriculture? – these are just three of the issues that, today, November 29, will be on the table.

Nuno Henrique Luz, a Saturday journalist, will be the moderator of the debate, which begins at 17 pm and also has Joanaz de Melo, from GEOTA, as rapporteur.
