Chamber of São Brás de Alportel issued a vote of regret

A Manuel Maia's death it constituted «a huge loss for the Algarve and for the country», considers the Chamber of São Brás de Alportel, which yesterday unanimously approved a vote of regret for the death of this archaeologist, who discovered, with his wife, the Vaso de Tavira.

Manuel Maia, who at the time of his disappearance was a curator and director of the Lucerna Museum, in Castro Verde, was a «historian, restorative conservator, archaeologist, active citizen in safeguarding and enhancing the archaeological heritage», who «left to his death a valuable legacy of archaeological discoveries».

«The municipality of São Brás de Alportel was honored to be part of its path of knowledge and to have Manuel Maia and his wife and archaeologist, Maria Adelaide Maia, who died in 2011, as friends of São Brasense heritage and history, guarding precious memories of special moments, grateful for your collaboration with the Municipal Archeology Office», states the municipality.

The municipality adds that Manuel Maia «was, is, and will always be remembered as a man dedicated to the study, safeguard, enhancement and dissemination of Portuguese archaeological heritage».

His death «constitutes for the scientific community linked to history the irreparable loss of someone who, from an early age, assumed, in Castro Verde and Tavira, as well as in the country, a strong civic and social commitment, for those who always wanted to perpetuate the past as a legacy of the future».

“On the occasion of his death, the Municipality of São Brás de Alportel expressed a vote of regret, condolences and fraternal solidarity with the family of Manuel Maia”, concludes the Chamber.
