Faro will have Municipal Police «in a year» after the Government's “green light”

Municipal Police Corps will consist of 26 agents

This Thursday, September 30, the Council of Ministers gave the “green light” to the creation of the Municipal Police of Faro which, "a year from now", should already be in operation, according to the mayor Rogério Bacalhau to the Sul Informação.

The creation and regulation of the Municipal Police were approved at a Chamber meeting on 21 September last year, at a Municipal Assembly on 7 October, and now, after a year, the decision has been ratified by the Government.

In statements to the Sul Informação, Rogério Bacalhau said he was "satisfied with the approval", because "it will allow for better security and supervision conditions in the county", but regretted "that it took a year for the Government to approve the decision".

After approval by the Council of Ministers, “the next step is publication in the Diário da República. Then, we will open a competition to hire people, who will have to go to the PSP for training to acquire the status of agent. Therefore, it is only at the end of hiring and training that we will have the Municipal Police up and running. This entire process could take a year. So, in a year's time, I hope to have the Municipal Police body working», explained the mayor of Faro.

According to Rogério Bacalhau, the creation of the Municipal Police is “provided for in the budget and provided for in the personnel map and, as soon as it is published in Diário da República, it is just a matter of constituting a jury, taking the Camara meeting and launching the tender for hiring of people".

The project foresees that the Municipal Police of Faro have a corps "with 26 agents, plus a support office, operational assistants and command".

The Municipal Police will have territorial competence in the four parishes «exercising primarily functions in the areas of monitoring compliance with municipal regulations (in the areas of urban planning, construction, defense and protection of nature and the environment, cultural heritage and hunting resources) and the application of the decisions of the municipal authorities”, explains the Chamber of Faro.

The new security force will also have surveillance functions in public spaces, namely areas surrounding schools, surveillance of local urban transport, as well as participating in programs aimed at police action in schools or specific groups of citizens.

The Municipal Police is also responsible for guarding municipal public buildings and equipment and also for supervising road and pedestrian traffic.
