Vila Real de Santo António cancels Praia da Praia again

The initiative was scheduled for between the 10th and 15th of October

The municipality of Vila Real de Santo António, taking into account the prevention measures implemented by Covid-19, is once again canceling the Feira da Praia, which would take place between the 10th and 15th of October.

"The measure follows the decision taken by the Intermunicipal Community of the Algarve (AMAL), since the Algarve's municipalities considered that the conditions were not met to allow the holding of annual fairs in the region", begins by saying a press release sent to newsrooms .

The Feira da Praia «is an event that receives thousands of people and where physical contact between visitors is impossible to control», so the municipality, to promote it, «would have to limit all entries and exits, reduce the number of participants and increase safety, de-characterizing the event and jeopardizing its profitability».

On the other hand, «even if all the security measures were met, nothing guarantees that the promotion of an initiative that receives so many Portuguese and foreign visitors at the same time and in the same space would not constitute a catalyst for the spread of the virus», he explains.

For Luís Romão, Mayor, «in this context, considering all possible advantages and disadvantages regarding the organization of Feira da Praia, it is the intention of this municipality to maintain prevention against the pandemic as a priority and to defend public health and the local economy itself ».

The municipality also recalls that, if there was an outbreak of Covid-19 in Vila Real de Santo António, "several commercial establishments could have been forced to close".
