Macário Correia (PSD) is the most voted for by the Municipal Assembly of Tavira…but he will not take office

The fight for AM was fierce, but parish councils plot the PSD's pretensions

The PSD list headed by José Macário Correia was the most voted for by the Municipal Assembly of Tavira, guaranteeing 42,74%, against 42,08% for the PS. In other words, what separated the two candidacies were a meager 80 votes.

Despite the victory, Macário Correia, in a post posted on his Facebook page, he has already announced that he will not be sworn in as a member of the Municipal Assembly, giving his place to “the other person on the list, under the law, in this case a young person, who will have an active participation there, an experience that I already had it and I must humbly give this opportunity to others».

It is that, as Macário Correia himself explains in this publication, even having guaranteed the highest number of direct votes, he would never be elected president of the Municipal Assembly. Why? Because the president of this body is elected by its members, but also by the presidents of the Parish Councils, who inherently have a seat in the AM. And in this case, most places, including the parishes, belong to the socialists.

«I am very grateful for the victory that the Tavirenses gave to the list that I headed for the Municipal Assembly. However, the Our team's main objective was to win the City Council, where only 123 votes were left. And we lost two parishes (Santa Luzia and Conceição/Cabanas) by a few dozen votes», explains Macário.

“The president of the Municipal Assembly is not elected by the population, but only by the 27 members of the said Assembly, the 21 directly elected and the presidents of the Parish Councils”, he stresses.

“Thus, the majority will of the population does not have the same effect in the election of 27. This is a situation that is in the law, but that many people are unaware of. In other words, it may be the President of the Assembly who loses in the direct election by the population, due to the inherence of the Parish Councils», considers the social democrat.

Now, Macário adds, "I ran to be president of the Municipal Assembly and that was the will of the voters, but that's not going to happen, as I explained."

In the Municipal Assembly of Tavira, and according to the rules that have been in the law for many years and that, at least the candidates for the various bodies should know, the PSD elected ten members, the PS as many and Chega obtained a municipal deputy. Inherently, they are joined by a president of the Parish Council of Cachopo, elected by the PSD (incidentally, stealing this parish to the socialists) and five elected by the PS, in Santa Catarina da Fonte do Bispo, Tavira, Conceição and Cabanas, Santa Luzia and also Luz de Tavira and Santo Estêvão.

Doing the math and if all the presidents of the Junta vote for the parties by which they were elected, as is predictable (there have already been surprises in other councils…), the PS will have 15 votes and the PSD 11. Therefore, everything indicates that the next president of the Tavira Municipal Assembly will be the socialist José Manuel Guerreiro.

The election of the president of the Municipal Assembly is normally done right after the swearing-in ceremony of all new municipal bodies.
