The Portuguese Professional Football League (LPFP) will distribute, equally, an amount of 850 thousand euros to all sports companies of the I and II League, to alleviate the financial consequences caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The measure proposed by the LPFP was unanimously approved at the General Assembly of the body, held today in Porto, and in which the Annual Report for the 2020/21 season was also ratified, which had a positive operating result of 1,158 million euros.
According to Mário Costa, president of the General Assembly of the LPFP, the 850 thousand euros support to the clubs for the issues of covid-19 «derives from a value that was not attributed to the sports companies of Vitória de Setúbal and Desportivo das Aves, when these were demoted, and from a fund of 550 thousand euros defined for unforeseen events».
Telmo Viana, financial director of the LPFP, recalled that this amount "may help reduce the many expenses that sports societies had in the fight against Covid-19", considering that it is "an important value and help" and stressing that the even “it can be redeemed immediately by the clubs”.
As for the Annual Report, which for the sixth consecutive year presented a positive operating result, this time of 1,158 million euros, 8% higher than what was foreseen in the global budget of 17 million euros, it was also unanimously approved by the sports companies.
The LPFP acknowledged that the exercise had "a strong impact caused by the Covid-19 pandemic" and that it was necessary "a reformulation of strategies and the redefinition of some activities foreseen for the budget to be met".
«The great wisdom in preparing a good budget is the strict adherence to it. Fortunately, despite the Covid-19 scourge, we were able to react and adjust the budget with revenues from the commercial and associative scope», explained Telmo Viana.
The financial director of the LPFP also clarified that the funds to support clubs that descend to the II League will continue to be distributed according to the specific rules approved by all sports societies.
