write-off of Faro there will be a new urban art mural

Initiative is promoted by Open Studios

the low of Faro there will be a new urban art mural on Rua do Compromisso, which will result from the work of artist Tiago Galo with the Algarvian Association of Parents and Friends of Mentally Diminished Children (AAPACDM). The project, which has already started, will be concluded on Tuesday, 14 September, and its main objective is to create "another artistic piece" for the capital of the Algarve.

The idea came from the mentors of the Open Studios event Faro, as part of the Open Room artist residency.

Since this Wednesday, the 8th, the young people of the Algarve Association of Parents and Friends of Mentally Diminished Children (AAPACDM) have had a special company: the artist Tiago Galo.

Until Friday, this illustrator will develop a work of storytelling and creating characters with users of this institution.

Everything will end, on Tuesday, the 14th, with the creation of a mural, by Tiago Galo, on Rua do Compromisso.

The choice of this location and this association was not innocent.

Toma Svazaite, one of those responsible for the Open Studios event Faro, explain to Sul Informação that the objective has always been “to work with the local community, creating a project that is also a reflection of the place where it operates”.

«We are interested in working in this neighborhood, where AAPACDM is located, which also needs a facelift. It's a place where older people live, but there's also the night part», he adds.

It is certain that, for Daniela Garcia, another of those responsible, this future mural will be «an attraction for people to also visit Rua do Compromisso».

The Open Room is an annual artistic residency project, started in 2020, promoted by Open Studios Faro, where national or international artists are invited to develop an artistic project with the local community.

Tiago Galo (Lisbon) began his work as an illustrator, collaborating in small fanzines and exhibitions, before finishing his degree in architecture at the Technical University of Lisbon.

In 2011, he won the award for best comic book in the Amadora BD contest. In 2014, he finished the course in Art Direction at Edit Creative School, in Lisbon. After a few years working as an architect, he ended up returning to his work as an illustrator.
