Rocha da Pena and Fonte Benémola in Loulé were subject to maintenance work

Works took place in the week of August 10th to 14th

The approved pedestrian paths of Rocha da Pena and Fonte Benémola were subject to various maintenance works, necessary for their proper functioning, in the week of August 10th to 14th, in a commitment made by the Municipality of Loulé to the Camping and Mountaineering Federation of Portugal, the entity responsible for the respective processes of implantation and approval of the routes.

"We replaced the 10 thematic panels that are found along the pedestrian paths, six in the protected area of Fonte Benémola and four in the protected area of Rocha da Pena, focusing on the themes of fauna, flora, water and built heritage" , says the municipality of Loulé.

These panels were already quite degraded, either for natural reasons (sun exposure, precipitation, wind, among others), or for acts of vandalism.

Its replacement, «for a better enjoyment of the visitors, also allowed for a revision, updating and improvement of the contents in a bilingual version, in Portuguese and English».

The local protected landscape of Fonte Benémola now also has six litter bins, «strengthening and complementing key places such as car parks, picnic parks and the right bank of the stream, next to the fillies», stresses the municipality of Loulé.

Soon, Totems will be posted, in the lesser known accesses, which will signal and alert visitors of their entry into a protected area.

Nine recycled plastic beacons will also be replaced and repaired, used to signal the pedestrian route of Rocha da Pena, which were degraded, "reinforcing the municipality's commitment to enhancing this space through the choice of more sustainable materials and structures", he adds. .

«We want to improve the living conditions of those looking for these spaces that are part of our natural heritage. This action aims not only to increase information to visitors, but also to raise awareness of the respect that we all must have for these protected areas and all the natural dynamics that occur there», stresses Vítor Aleixo, Mayor of Loulé.

The protected landscapes of Rocha da Pena and Fonte da Benémola are two of the geosites that are part of the aspiring Geopark Algarvensis Loulé-Silves-Albufeira.
