A total of 674 operational, supported by 234 vehicles and, now that the sun has risen, by aerial means, continue to fight against the fire that started yesterday, the 18th, in Savóia (Odemira) and passed to the neighboring municipality of Monchique. The work of the firefighters, during the night, was to prevent the flames from also spreading to the municipality of Silves.

After a night of hard work, the flames "began to give way" to the work of firefighters, although there is still a long way to go before this fire, which has two fronts, can be considered dominated, said a source from the National Emergency and Protection Authority Civil (ANEPC).

Although the drop in temperature during the night gave some help, the topography of the terrain, which is very uneven and with areas where land resources cannot reach, made the task more difficult.

Meanwhile, the national road 266 (locally known as the Sabóia road) is cut, in the municipality of Monchique, between Nave Redonda and the Algarve mountain village.

This fire, which started at 13:14 pm yesterday in the town of João Martins, parish of Sabóia (Odemira), has already caused two injuries, one of which is serious, destroyed a house consumed by the flames and forced the removal, as a precaution, of nearly two dozen of people from the site of Cansino (Monchique).

The seriously injured was a civilian, aged 20, who suffered burns and had to be transported to hospital. The other injured was a firefighter, who had to be assisted on the spot, for having suffered a sprain,

During the afternoon and night, the smoke, pushed by the wind, got down to the coastal Algarve. At dawn, the smell of smoke was intense, at least in the area between Portimão and Armação de Pêra.
