Pleasure boat with four people on board sinks in front of Cacelha Velha

Crews managed to swim ashore

A pleasure boat with four people on board sank yesterday afternoon, Saturday, in front of the beach of Cacela Velha, on the coast of Vila Real de Santo António, the causes that led to the sinking of the vessel are unknown.

Following an alert received at 15:00 pm, through the Lisbon Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC Lisbon), informing that a vessel had capsized, elements of the Local Command of the Tavira Maritime Police were sent to the scene. and the “SeaWatch” Project, as well as a boat and a personal watercraft from the Vila Real de Santo António Lifeguards Station. There were also elements of INEM who traveled to the site.

However, the four crew members had managed to reach land by their own means, and one of them had slight abrasions on his arm, having been assisted by an element of the “SeaWatch” Project and by INEM.

The vessel was located in a surf zone between Fábrica and Cabanas beaches. However, according to the National Maritime Authority, it was not "possible to retrieve it at the moment, the skipper of the vessel being notified to proceed with its removal as soon as possible".

The Lisbon Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC Lisbon) was also contacted to issue a notice to navigation.

The local Command of the Maritime Police of Tavira took care of the occurrence.
