Minister Ricardo Serrão Santos will dive with the clams off Lagos

Oceano Fresco's nursery is «unique in the world»

Ricardo Serrão Santos, Minister of the Sea, will take a dip and get to know the clams produced by Oceano Fresco in a 100-hectare nursery in the open sea, "unique in the world", off the coast of Lagos, on Friday. thursday, the 23rd of july, at 15 pm.

The minister, accompanied by Helena Vieira, general director of Sea Policy, will visit this aquaculture specializing in bivalves, where good and spotted clams are cultivated, as part of the Blue Economy and Entrepreneurship Roadmap.

This is a project by the Oceano Fresco company, «in which the cultivation is carried out using scientific methodologies for the selection and reproduction of native European clam species, threatened by invasive species of low nutritional value», according to the Ministry of the Sea.

This aquaculture began to be installed in June 2020 and represents an investment of 3,1 million euros, guaranteed by community funds from the MAR 2020 Program, by equity and also using a collaborative financing platform through loans (crowdlending).

The company's objective is to produce 300 tons of these bivalves per year, when the nursery is at its maximum capacity.

"Commercial fishing is banned in the nursery, which has created a sanctuary effect for the preservation of marine biodiversity," concludes the ministry.
