Manuel Alegre wins António Ramos Rosa National Poetry Award

Prize will be awarded in September

Manuel Alegre was awarded the António Ramos Rosa National Poetry Prize for his book “When”, announced today, 28 July, the Chamber of Faro.

The award ceremony will take place on the 4th of September, in the Municipal Library Auditorium of Faro Antonio Ramos Rosa.

The jury of this competition decided, «unanimously», to award the prize to this work by the Portuguese poet, bearing in mind that «it is a book in which the poet invests his long experience of writing and, at the same time, gives a very strong presence of subjectivity lost in the present time, with the marks of the reality we are experiencing».

Manuel Alegre manages to transcend «the circumstance through a writing that breaks with the poet's habits, and this renewal of one of the strongest voices in our poetry is worth underlining».

This award, of which seven editions have already taken place – 1999, 2001, 2007, 2009, 2015, 2017 and 2019 -, «seeks to promote the appearance of new poets, but also to recognize the work of those already established».

«After interruption in 2009, it was recovered in 2015, presenting today a cash prize of 5000 euros. In all editions, the prize has already had more than 50 works in competition, having been awarded to poets of recognized literary excellence such as Fernando Echevarria, Fernando Guimarães, Nuno Júdice, João Rui de Sousa, Luís Quintais, João Luís Barreto Guimarães and Gastão Cruz », concluded the Chamber of Faro.

The António Ramos Rosa National Poetry Prize promoted by the municipality, with the high sponsorship of the Millenium BCP Foundation and the support of the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve, University of Algarve and JL – Jornal de Letras, Artes e Ideias.

The award jury is made up of Nuno Júdice, poet, critic and professor, by Carina Infante do Carmo, professor at the University of Algarve, and by Isabel Lucas, journalist and writer.
