Portugal and Spain renew fishing agreement and force national timetables

Agreement was signed on the sidelines of the Council of Fisheries Ministers of the European Union

Portugal and Spain signed, in Luxembourg, a new bilateral fisheries agreement that foresees, inter alia, the observance of activity schedules in each country, according to a statement from the Ministry of the Sea.

The agreement, signed on the sidelines of the Council of Fisheries Ministers of the European Union (EU), establishes that trawlers comply with the activity schedules in force in each country, as well as technical measures and no-go zones and closed areas.

The agreement, which has existed since 1986 – the year both countries joined what is now the EU – regulates access to mutual waters on the continent, outside the 12 miles, and in border areas within the 12 miles.

The two countries also agreed to improve cooperation through the exchange of information between the entities responsible for recording the use of fishing opportunities.

The document was signed by Ricardo Serrão Santos and his Spanish counterpart, Luis Planas Puchades, on the sidelines of the last Council on Agriculture and Fisheries of the Portuguese EU presidency, which ends today in Luxembourg.
