Music in the quarry, medieval bridge with tapestry and art in the mine: here is GeoPalcos

The aim of this festival is to promote the Geopark Algarvensis Loulé-Silves-Albufeira

A concert at nightfall in a quarry, a medieval tapestry-covered bridge, shows in the castle or an artistic installation in a rock salt mine. These are proposals from the GeoPalcos Arte.Ciência.Natureza festival that runs until September, in Loulé, Silves and Albufeira.

The aim is to promote the Algarvensis Loulé-Silves-Albufeira Geopark, an aspiring UNESCO World Geopark, and make the public discover its emblematic geosites.

It will be from 10 geosites – and other unusual places – that the GeoPalcos Arte.Ciência.Natureza project will be developed.

This is an event that intends to be biannual, conceived based on the collaboration and participation of the populations, which links art, science and nature.

Of the complete programme, this Wednesday, June 23rd, the inauguration, at the Sal-Gema Mine, in Loulé, of “O osso do mar”, an artistic, visual and sound installation, by Miguel Cheta, stands out. Christine Henry and João Caiano.

This Saturday, June 26, Silves receives “Fado & Blues, the Wedding in the Pedreira” by Vítor Bacalhau and Ricardo Martins, a project of fusion of identity music from two countries on different sides of the Atlantic Ocean, which also has a show Multimedia from the students of the Secondary School of Silves.

On the 2nd of July, at the Medieval Bridge of Paderne, the Outdoor Installation “ALGARVENSIS” / Tapestry” by artist Vanessa Barragão will be inaugurated. All events are free and subject to availability.

As Cristina Veiga-Pires, scientific director of the Geopark, explains, «the application to UNESCO World Geopark came as a result of the important paleontological heritage, which in recent years has been revealed in the formation of sandstone in Silves».

«It all started with the discovery of the Metoposaurus algarvensis (227 million years), a unique species of giant salamander with more than 2 meters in length that gives its name to this geopark, has only been described so far in this region of the world”, he concludes.

Today, it is already possible to visit some of the identified geosites and discover the culture, nature, people and gastronomy that surround them, on an immersive trip to the interior of this Algarve where the DNA of the entire region resides.
