Loulé City Council installed free Internet access points in public spaces in rural areas of the municipality, such as Vale Judeu, the Train Station, Soalheira, Parragil, Monte Seco, Querença, Tôr and Benafim.
According to the municipality, in the parish of São Sebastião, the Sociedade Recreativa e Cultural de Vale Judeu (with two access points), the Loulé Railway Station (with two access points) now has wireless coverage. Soalheira, the Parragil Cultural and Social Center and the Monte Seco Association.
At the Union of Parishes of Querença, Tôr and Benafim, equipment was installed next to the headquarters of the former parishes of Querença, Tôr and Benafim.
According to the City Council, "these places were selected based on requests from the parish councils themselves, which expressed the interest of the populations and indicated the most central spaces that mobilized people."
This project was partially funded by the application to the European Commission's “WIFI4EU” project, an initiative that promotes free wireless access to the internet in public spaces such as parks, squares, public buildings, libraries, health centers and museums, for the benefit of citizens across Europe.
Under this project, municipalities can apply for vouchers worth 15 thousand euros, which must be used to install wireless equipment in public spaces that do not yet have a free access point.
The project involves an investment of around 65 euros, plus VAT at the legal rate in force and includes communication costs for 3 years.
With this initiative, the Municipality of Loulé says that “it intended to continue the expansion of the availability of high quality Wi-Fi networks in the municipality's public space, providing free internet to the resident population and tourists”.
This project started a few years ago, starting with implementation in several places in the main population centers in the municipality: Loulé, Quarteira and Almancil.
