Normal circulation on the International Bridge over the Guadiana River, connecting the municipalities of Castro Marim and Ayamonte, has already been restored, after the completion of the requalification works of this infrastructure, announced the company Infrastructures de Portugal, responsible for the works.

With an investment of over 9 million euros, the completion of this work has ensured better traffic conditions for the thousands of motorists who daily cross the border, on this one of the main links between Portugal and Spain.

The contract included the paving, treatment of sidewalks, guardrails and security guards, rehabilitation of the tie-rod system and implementation of safety measures for its protection, repair of reinforced concrete elements and improvement and/or replacement of support equipment , gaskets and other security elements.

The works also included the rehabilitation of the lighting and signaling systems in the river area, as well as the decorative lighting of the Bridge, reinforcement and adaptation of road signs and the implementation of a variable signaling system and the installation of new bridge monitoring systems.

IP adds that, from this intervention, the work carried out for the complete replacement of the trusses system stands out, having replaced the 128 trusses that help support the International Bridge over the Guadiana River. There were 500 kilometers of cords made up of seven intertwined galvanized steel wires – the distance from Lisbon to Bragança. There were 3500 kilometers of steel wires – the perimeter of the Iberian Peninsula.

As it is an International Bridge, an Agreement was established between Portugal and Spain, which defined the conditions for financing, contracting, conservation and monitoring, whereby the value of the intervention was shared equally between the two countries.
