Portimonian photojournalist João Porfírio, photography editor for the newspaper Observador, was the winner in the News category of the Estação Imagem 2021 award, with coverage of demonstrations against racism in the United States.

“These demonstrations came just days before the presidential elections in the US and left Philadelphia with fire and iron. On one side of the city “peaceful” demonstrations where there were detainees, wounded by the protesters and the police, on the other dozens of shops to be looted and completely destroyed. These demonstrations took place due to the killing of (another) African American by the police. Walter Wallace, 27, died on October 25th», recalls João Porfírio on his Facebook page.

«This work entitled “Manifestations against racism” shows, in 10 photographs, what has always been seen. It's a very small part of the racial inequality that lives in the streets of the USA”, he adds.

“Racism is fought by showing that racism exists”, concludes João Porfírio.

The Estação Imagem Award is the biggest award for photojournalism in Portugal.
