Faro will not charge Municipal Tourist Tax until the end of February 2022

Chamber decided to extend the suspension of charging this fee

Faro will extend the suspension of the Municipal Tourist Tax collection until October 31st and, in practice, exempt the 24 tourist developments and the approximately 730 local accommodation units in the municipality must pay this tax by the end of February 2022.

The extension of the suspension of this fee, which only takes effect between the 1st of March and the 31st of October of each year, was approved at the Chamber Meeting on Monday.

Thus, until February 2022, «tourist enterprises and local accommodation establishments in the municipality are exempt from submitting the monthly declaration for the collection of the municipal tourist tax for the overnight stays of their respective guests».

In a first phase and within the scope of extraordinary and temporary measures adopted due to the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic, it was decided not to collect this tax until 30 June.

"However, taking into account the recent evolution of the tourism sector and the reduced prospects of tourist reservations for the coming months, resulting from measures to combat the pandemic in the main tourism source markets for the municipality and region, with particular emphasis on the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands and France, and that the coming months are decisive for companies to recover financially from the losses of revenue verified, the municipality of Faro decided to extend this extraordinary measure, with a view to supporting the 24 tourist developments and around 730 existing local accommodation units in the municipality», justified the municipality.
