Covid-19: Interval for second Astrazeneca vaccine shot reduced to 8 weeks

The recommendation is contained in the standard of the General Directorate of Health (DGS)

The interval between taking the second dose of Astrazeneca vaccine has been reduced from 12 to eight weeks to ensure "rapid protection" against the transmission of new "concerning variants" of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, according to the Directorate-General of the Health.

The recommendation is contained in the standard of the General Directorate of Health (DGS) “Vaccination Campaign against COVID-19 Vaccine VAXZEVRIA” released today and which updates the vaccination schedule for this vaccine against Covid-19.

According to the DGS, the vaccination schedule of VAXZEVRIA, also known as Astrazeneca, is two doses with an interval of eight to 12 weeks, "the interval of eight weeks is currently recommended in order to ensure the fastest protection" provided by vaccination completes "on the transmission of new strains of concern (VoC) of SARS-CoV-2", such as the Delta variant, associated with India.
