“Ventania” of performing arts reaches Lagos, Lagoa and Portimão

Programming deepens sustainability issues, bringing them to the artistic level

Amb Altres

Ventania – Barlavento Performing Arts Festival is back, in the municipalities of Lagos (2, 3 and 4 June), Lagoa (11 and 12 June) and Portimão (11 September), with a program that deepens the issues sustainability, bringing them to the artistic level.

In this 3rd edition, Ventania proposes to «present solutions to overcome some of the great challenges we face globally, but also in the Algarve region in particular», says Teatro Experimental de Lagos (TEL), which organizes the festival.

The opening of this year's edition will be in Lagos, with the artistic installation of the “Windy” project, which combines the work of the ceramist Ricardo Lopes with a sound environment created by the multidisciplinary artist Carlos Norton.

«This creation counts on the collaboration of the work developed before the festival by the workshop “A Água na Terra”, in which a 3rd year class from the EB1 and JI School of Santa Maria de Lagos, coordinated by the ceramist, dedicated themselves to the exploration of a ancestral technique of underground irrigation through unglazed clay pots, which could turn out to be one of the solutions for the scarcity of water in the territory».

Also from the perspective of artistic co-creation with the Algarve community, the contemporary physical theater and circus project “Uns Amb Altres”, under the artistic direction of the Catalan artist Pau Portabella, will tour the three municipalities.

The show, "which addresses fracturing social issues such as freedom, individuality and the position of the individual in society", will be starred by the recently formed Coletivo Ventania – a group of artists residing in the Algarve, versed in multiple performing arts, who came together with the purpose of forming an anchor project of collective creation in the region.

In Lagoa, the festival once again assumes a prominent place with the participation of students from ESPAMOL de Lagoa's Schools Group, in what is the «great artistic commission of the Festival – Androidinópolis, the capital of the New Order (Apocalyptic Oratory for Choir of Children and Ensemble)», says the organization.

This will be an artistic creation of the conductor and composer Jorge Salgueiro, with the collaboration of the Algarve Grupo de Percussão and the artistic residency of the Ventania Ensemble group.

«Androidinópolis is a work that foreshadows a dystopian future as a way of alerting to a reality not so distant. Between fear and love, doubt and hope, the work calls for urgent action in terms of sustainability and environmental concerns, forging steps towards a better future in its world premiere in Lagoa».

Between visual arts, physical theatre, dance and contemporary music, the Ventania festival «re-assumes itself as a festival without equal in the national territory, as always based on the key ideals of development and promotion of artistic activism», returning in September to Portimão where, in addition to contemporary dance, it will feature a puppet theater.

“Aurora”, staged by the company Teatro e Puppets de Mandrágora, deals with “inhabiting and caring for Nature and the overvaluation we give to city spaces, guiding the public through the search for the legends and traditions of the north of the country. The show, which appeals to a strong sense of ecological and environmental responsibility, is created through the reuse of plastics and objects in the construction of its sets, costumes and puppets», says the TEL.

Finally, “Océaniques Anonymes” will be Ventania's closing show. Created by choreographer Gaël Domenger, this is a collaboration between the French contemporary dance company “Poème en Volume” and “Kale Companhia de Dança de Gaia”.

The work is based on the documentary work of photographer Hélène David and writer Donatien Garnier, transporting the public to a multidisciplinary experience focused on the daily lives of XNUMXst century sailors.

«Between visual arts, physical theater, contemporary dance, puppet theater and contemporary music, Ventania – Festival of Performing Arts of Barlavento once again assumes itself as a festival without equal in the national territory, as always based on the key ideals of development and promotion of artistic activism”.

The Ventania Festival is promoted by TEL – Experimental Theater Association of Lagos, co-financed by the General Directorate of Arts, Municipality of Lagos, Municipality of Lagoa, Municipality of Portimão and S. Gonçalo de Lagos Parish Council, in a local partnership with the ecosystem of performing arts from the Barlavento Algarvio region.
