The transmissibility index, or R(t), has fallen sharply in the Algarve, from 1,08 last week to 0,95 today, 21 May, according to the report “Monitoring the red lines for Covid-19 ” that the National Institute of Health Doctor Ricardo Jorge (INSA) has just released.

Still with regard to transferability, Alentejo, with a rate of 0,92, is the region of the country where this indicator was the lowest, in the period between 12 and 16 May.

Both regions have values below the national average, which is currently 1,03, «a level nnational e for o C“ontinent” – a week ago it was 0,99.

As for the cumulative incidence at 14 days, on May 19, "it was 53 cases per 100 inhabitants in Portugal, representing a slightly increasing trend", revealed the INSA.

By region, the Algarve is the one where this indicator is highest in Mainland Portugal, with 76 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants, which represents a slight increase compared to last Friday (it was 68,4).

In contrast, Alentejo has a value below the national average (39), just above the Center (31). Lisboa and Vale do Tejo have 52 and the North 55.

Back to R(t), the region where it had the highest level of transmissibility was Lisbon and Vale do Tejo (1,11), «suggesting a growing trend, more accentuated in this region».

Maintaining this growth rate and that seen in the country, "the time to reach the cumulative incidence rate of 14 days of 120 cases per 100 inhabitants will be 000 to 61 days and 120 to 31 days, respectively, for the level national and Lisbon and the Tagus Valley».

"The increase in the values of the R(t) transmissibility index must be closely monitored over the next week, as it could signal the beginning of a period of growth in the epidemic," warned the INSA.

The institute also reports on “community transmission of moderate intensity and reduced pressure on health services”.

“The daily number of Covid-19 cases hospitalized in Intensive Care Units (ICU) on the continent showed a slightly decreasing trend, corresponding to 24% of the defined critical value of 245 occupied beds”, framed this entity.

As for the variants of the new coronavirus, the UK call continues to clearly prevail in Portugal (91,2%).

There are even two regions, Madeira and the Azores, where it is the only strain of the new coronavirus present. On the mainland, Alentejo is the region with the highest prevalence (97,6%), followed by Algarve (96,3%).

The cases associated with the South African and Brazilian variants were around the hundred, until May 19, in both cases. Even so, INSA considers that "community transmission exists" of these variants.

With regard to the Indian lineage, two dozen cases have been identified and "there does not seem to be community transmission of this variant", says the institute.
