Albufeira's fiber optic network expanded to reach 85% of the houses in the municipality

Altice expects to complete the expansion by the end of the year

Optical fiber will reach 85% of the municipality of Albufeira by the end of 2021, after the expansion of the network that Altice Portugal will operate, under a protocol signed yesterday with the municipality of Albufeira, in Paços do Concelho.

The agreement also provides for the "reciprocal use of conduits belonging to each of the entities, which are already installed in the geographical area of the municipality", according to the City Council of Albufeira.

Under this protocol, «Altice promises to carry out, by the end of this year 2021, the expansion of the fiber optic network in the Municipality of Albufeira, in order to reach an availability rate equal to or greater than 85% of the number of dwellings in the municipality» .

According to José Carlo Rolo, this agreement brings together two entities, one public and the other private, with a common objective, that of «better serving the resident citizens, but also all those who visit us, the tourists we so long to arrive in the coming months. ».

In the mayor's opinion, this is an initiative of "a huge timeliness", due to the pandemic, which "always changed the way we work and relate to others", but not only that.

“See, for example, meetings through digital platforms, teleworking and distance learning. It is clear that human beings need interpersonal relationships, which will continue to exist, but we are increasingly geared towards the use of digital platforms to meet quickly and expeditiously, avoiding large displacements and wasting time", believes the mayor .

On the other hand, «digital technologies are fundamental for the proper functioning of schools and the educational success of our students».

The arrival of the pandemic forced distance learning, for which “we were not prepared”.

This forced the municipality to purchase tablets and laptops with internet access so that students from different levels of education could enjoy online classes.

"This is the world we live in and hence the importance of good communication networks, because when the internet signal is weak, this implies problems in terms of learning, teaching, communication and efficiency in the world of work", he concluded José Carlos Rolo.

João Teixeira, representative of Altice, also underlined that «nothing will ever be the same again», stressing that «we will have to find “a hybrid model” that goes through some of the customs we had previously become more digital and others become again as they were».

As for the expansion of the fiber optic network, «there will always be areas we won't be able to reach», but the door is open «to talk, try to understand and resolve situations».

But, "if you identify some areas that are important and that lack fiber optics, we are available to sit down at the table and see what we can do together," added João Teixeira.
