Minister announces extraordinary measures to support the wine sector in Lagoa

Package will have a value of 8 million euros

Yesterday, in Lagoa, the minister of Agriculture announced an extraordinary package of measures to support the wine sector of 8 million euros, whose warning will open on May 31, during a visit she made to this Algarve municipality, as part of the Wine Cities Contest, which is taking place at the Centro Cultural do Convento de S. José.

The announced package foresees the inclusion of the wine sector in the exceptional temporary support measure for farmers and SMEs, as well as “the investment support aimed at increasing the wine storage capacity, the opening, to the wine sector, of applications to the measure “3.3.1 – Investment, transformation and commercialization of agricultural products”, foreseen for the 4th quarter, and the possibility of opening applications for crisis distillation”, according to Maria do Céu Antunes.

The government official, accompanied by Rui Martinho, Secretary of State for Agriculture and Rural Development, visited the Única – Adega Cooperativa de Lagoa, where she learned about «the history and tradition of a people who once dedicated themselves mainly to wine and vines. », according to the Chamber of Lagoa.

There, Maria do Céu Antunes «discovered the best wines in the municipality and had the opportunity to discover the collection of one of the oldest and most emblematic wineries in the country».

Later, Maria do Céu Antunes went to the Centro Cultural de S. José, where she spoke with the jury of the Cidades do Vinho Contest and where Luís Encarnação, Mayor of Lagoa, explained «the evolution of the wine sector in the county, which has there has been an increase in the number of producers since Lagoa was Cidade do Vinho, in 2016».

«It is with great satisfaction that Lagoa received the visit of Ms. Minister of Agriculture, as a winegrowing territory and formerly one of the largest wine producers in the country. It is not every day that Lagoa is the stage for such important announcements for the country, such as the one we had the privilege of hearing, firsthand, in support of the wine sector», considered the mayor.

The Cidade do Vinho Contest, organized by AMPV (Association of Portuguese Wine Municipalities) and ARVP (Association of Wine Routes in Portugal), in partnership with the municipality of Lagoa, Recevin – European Network of Wine Cities and Città del Vino, run until tomorrow, Sunday.

From this event, representatives of Portugal will take part in the European Competition of Wine Cities, scheduled for Modena, in Italy, in September.
