The shopping center Mar Shopping Algarve, located in Loulé, will promote this weekend, 29th and 30th of May, a cleaning in the Ria Formosa that will involve about 150 volunteers.

The waste collected during the Ria Formosa cleaning action will be sent to FAGAR, the entity that manages water and waste in Faro, which later and in coordination with ALGAR, responsible for sorting materials for recycling, will give them the most appropriate destination.

The MAR Shopping Algarve initiative also has a partnership with the Portuguese Environment Agency, ARA – Animal Rescue Algarve; City Council of Faro, CCMAR – Marine Science Center; Nautical Center of Praia de Faro, Designer Outlet Algarve, ICNF – Institute for Nature and Forest Conservation, IKEA, Parish Council of Montenegro, RTA – Algarve Tourism Region, SPEA – Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds and Zoomarine.

After the cleaning action carried out by the volunteers, the Portuguese Environment Agency, through the Administration of the Hydrographic Region of the Algarve, will carry out an awareness-raising action with the qualitative and quantitative assessment of the marine litter collected, as well as an analysis of the presence of microplastics in the water body of the Ria Formosa. This action will take place on May 30, next to the Nautical Center of
Faro.

The 150 participants from the entities involved in the initiative and from other local associations and organizations, such as the Guias de Faro, will be divided into teams of about 10 to 15 people and will act in areas previously identified by the ICNF, so as not to interfere with protected or nesting areas.

All teams will be accompanied by an element of the organization to ensure the protection/safeguarding of the dune ecosystem. This action, which takes place at the beginning of the bathing season, will be held again in October, coinciding with the end of the season.

For Ana Antunes, general director of MAR Shopping Algarve, «this is an awareness-raising action that we consider essential to create a spirit of collaboration between the partners in the common direction of environmental preservation, also inspiring the local population to adopt good practices in consideration when carrying out activities in nature and beyond».

The organizing entity also refers that the action enhances the sharing of knowledge between entities regarding the local fauna, periods and areas of nesting and environmental heritage, in addition to raising awareness and raising awareness in the community.
