The competition jury was chaired by António Ventura, former chairman of the board of the Portuguese Association of Enology and Viticulture (APEV). The chairman of the Honor Committee was Vasco D'Avillez, who has dedicated more than 40 years to the wine sector, while the chairman of the Scientific Committee was the expert and researcher António Curvelo Garcia. The results of this contest will be announced on the 12th of June, at the Feira Nacional de Agricultura, in Santarém.

“The Cities of Wine Competition is part of the International Competition that has been promoted for 18 years by the Italian association Città del Vino, and is unique in the world for uniting municipalities and producers, that is, for simultaneously promoting wines and territories”, highlighted José Arruda, secretary general of AMPV.

On the 6th of May, the XIII edition of the Algarve Wine Contest took place, also at the Convento de S. José, in partnership with the Municipality of Lagoa and the Association of Portuguese Municipalities of Wine. The technical direction of the competition was the responsibility of the Algarve Wine Commission.

The wine sector in the Algarve, and in particular in Lagoa, has seen considerable development, not only in terms of quantity, but mainly in terms of quality, and is a strong investment in the Algarve region. Also, wine tourism has been expanding, increasingly, in the region.

To receive these competitions in Lagoa «is recognition of the extraordinary growth that the wine sector has had in our municipality, but also in our region. For some years now, we have assumed that our strategy involves promoting our territory, our beaches, our golf courses, our cuisine, associated with our excellent wines, thus combating seasonality», stressed Luís Encarnação, Mayor of Lagoa.
