British government confirms Portugal (and the Algarve) on the “green list” of travel

Portugal is one of the exceptions within Europe

Portugal will be on the “green list” of countries considered safe to travel and exempt from quarantine upon arrival in England from 17 May, announced today the British Transport Minister, Grant Shapps.

Portugal is one of the exceptions within Europe, while most will be on the “yellow” list, subject to tighter restrictions, like Spain, France and Greece.

The foreign travel ban will be lifted on May 17, confirmed Shapps, the next step in the ongoing decontamination plan.

“We've made tremendous progress fighting the Covid-19 pandemic in the UK. We haven't reached the end, but the signs are very positive”, said Shapps,

However, he said that it is necessary not to put this success at risk and that "the only way out of the pandemic is care and prudence".

“We have to make sure that countries we reconnect with are safe, that infection rates are low and vaccination rates high, and they are not incubating dangerous variants and have surveillance in place,” he said.

Since January, travel abroad has been prohibited except in cases of force majeure and with valid justification, and offenses are penalized with fines of 5.000 pounds (5.800 euros).
