Olhão clears land to prevent fire

Land clearing period extended to 15 May

Six elements of the Civil Protection and Municipal Fire Departments of Olhão, aided by two tractors, are cleaning pasture and bush areas and have already built secondary tracks on the perimeter of the Pinheiros de Marim Maintenance Circuit.

This action, explains the Municipality of Olhão, "also covers the population agglomeration and the area of the campsite, in an area that reaches 27 hectares".

Also the road network under the responsibility of the Municipality «will be the target of cleaning actions, with the objective of preparing the best way for the hot months that are coming».

These measures, explains the municipality of Olhão, "are developed within the scope of the Municipal Plan for the Defense of Forest Against Fires, whose Municipal Operational Plan for 2021 was approved last March 31 by the Municipal Forest Defense Commission."

In addition to the municipality (through the Municipal Civil Protection), this municipal land clearing strategy includes parish councils and municipal companies, as well as Infraestruturas de Portugal (road and rail) and EDP, among others.

The Municipal Civil Protection alerts to the fact that the period for rural cleanings has been extended until 15 May, with the owners and/or tenants of lands bordering buildings located in rural areas having the obligation to carry out the respective cleaning within a radius of 50 meters.

"Those who do not meet the deadlines incur in the payment of fines", warns the Chamber of Olhão.
