Mega Torch Florida is born in the center of São Brás de Alportel

The exhibition of this installation is part of the program “Together we celebrate Easter at Home – united by heart and tradition”

It is the great feast of São Brás de Alportel, but, for the second year in a row, it will not be celebrated with the traditional Procession of Hallelujah. But, so as not to let the date slip by, the City Council created a Mega Torch Florida, in Largo de São Sebastião, weighing more than 200 kilos, which can be seen, in all its fullness, on Easter Sunday, 4 de April.

The exhibition of this installation is part of the program “Together we celebrate Easter at Home – united by the heart and by tradition”, which includes a Eucharistic celebration with online transmission, a documentary exhibition and several physical and digital exhibitions. Also in progress, until April 4th, is the 12th Gastronomic Fortnight, with a special edition takeaway and at home.

The structure of the Florida Torch of Homage was built using iron materials from the city's workshops and will be decorated with 134 flower vases and complemented with country flowers allusive to the Florida Torch Festival, carrying a candle on top of the torch.

This artistic installation was produced by the metalworking team, with the support of the carpentry, painting, bricklayers, pavers and electricity sectors. The design and decoration were designed by Sónia Martins, from the Municipal Tourism Office, the project was carried out by councilor Acácio Martins and also had the support of the Communication Office, the sports and culture offices, among other municipal employees.

"This piece of collective art is intended to mark this time much cherished by the São Brasenses, pay homage to the São Brasenses who have always given voice and hands to this tradition and remember the poet Bernardo de Passos, who inspired his land", says the Chamber of São Brás de Alportel.

On Easter Sunday, April 4th, the program starts at 10 am, when the Parish of São Brás de Alportel celebrates the Eucharist of the Resurrection in an open-air mass with limited places and online transmission through the Municipality's social networks.

The parish priest will pass through the streets where the Procession of Hallelujah used to pass, with all the people from São Bras being invited to take their torches and quilts to the windows and balconies to proclaim the litany: “He is risen as I said: Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah”.

The digital exhibition “Digital Photography Trunk” will be published on Facebook of the Municipality and of the Sambrasense Cultural Association during Easter Sunday.

This exhibition will then be on display in physical format in the hall of the Municipal Library between the 5th and 17th of April. Also in the atrium of the Municipal Library, the winning works of the “Floral Games 2021” contest will be exhibited at the same time, an initiative that was usually made known on Easter Sunday afternoon, when the winners read their inspired blocks in the São Brasenses Paschal traditions.

In the lobby of the São Brás Cineteatro, the exhibition “Feast of the Florida Torches – Procession of Hallelujah” will be presented until April 31st.

The Florida Torch Festival is usually organized in partnership by the Parish of São Brás de Alportel, the Associação Cultural Sambrasense and the Municipality of São Brás de Alportel.
