“Luzia”, a book to honor Paco de Lucía's mother

These initiatives serve to mark Mother's Day in Castro Marim

The children's book “Luzia”, inspired by Paco de Lucía's mother, is presented this Sunday, May 2, Mother's Day, at 17 pm, in Monte Francisco (Castro Marim), where he was from. On the same day, the municipality will promote an online concert by Pedro Jóia Trio.

These initiatives serve to mark Mother's Day in Castro Marim.

The tribute «to women and mothers, «whose legacies guide and inspire us», such as Lucía Gomes, will gain «new expression in the children's book “Luzia”, a work inspired by Paco de Lucía's mother, built by writer Pedro Seromenho and illustrated by Elias Gato».

The presentation takes place on May 2, Mother's Day, at 17 pm, at the Paco de Lucía Memorial, in Monte Francisco (Largo Manuel Gomes).

«Produced as a pedagogical resource for a cultural and recreational project, “Luzía” will then be taken to educational agents and students, seeking to bring the cultural heritages and links that Paco de Lucía imprinted on his musicality, but also creating a place for reflection on the gender equality plan and the importance and place of motherhood in our society», says the Chamber of Castro Marim.

The book “Luzia” is an initiative framed in the Action Plan for the Development of Endogenous Resources (PADRE), approved within the scope of Algarve2020, being supported by Portugal and the European Union and 70% co-financed by the FEDER.

In this same place, after the presentation of the book, another tribute to Paco de Lucía will take place, this time to his work, with a concert by Pedro Jóia Trio, a tribute that crosses the guitar of Pedro Jóia, himself a disciple of Paco, the accordion by João Frade and Norton Daiello on double bass.

Due to the current pandemic situation, this concert will be accessible to the public only online, through the live stream on Facebook from Municipality of Castro Marim and Facebook of the Bezaranha cultural program.

Paco de Lucía (born in neighboring Andalucia – Algeciras), recognized as one of the best composers and guitarists in the world, had his roots in Castro Marim, specifically in Monte Francisco, the land where his mother, Lucía Gomes, was born. His strong connection to his maternal roots is perpetuated in his artistic name and Francisco Gustavo Sánchez Gomes becomes Paco de Lucía. With the same intention of paying homage to the Portuguese face that always made him proud, he released the albums Castro Marín” (1981) and “Luzia” (1998).

Castro Marim also lived this desire to promote the “absolute master of flamenco”, expanding the umbilical relationship that Paco de Lucía carried in his music. Thus, in 2017, the Festival de Lucía was born.
