Sculpture in Vila da Luz honors athlete Matthias Sandeck, deceased in 2019

Sculpture was installed at the Prainha viewpoint

A sculpture in honor of Matthias Sandeck, a young man from the Algarve who died in 2019 while participating in an underwater fishing competition in Denmark, was installed last Friday at the Prainha viewpoint, in Luz. authored by the artist Lacobrigense Rita Pereira.

Matthias Sandeck, who had dual nationality (Portuguese and German) and lived in the municipality of Lagos, since he was five months old, was part of the National Underwater Fishing Team, having died, at the age of 31, when he participated in the XXXII Euro-African Championship in Denmark.

«A serious accident occurred on the second day of competition, on September 8, 2019, would lead to the death of this young athlete, a premature match that deeply shook friends and family», recalls the Câmara de Lagos.

The limestone sculpture, made in his honor and donated to the municipality, represents, according to Rita Pereira, its creator, «the descent to the bottom of the sea, a dance between life and death».

The two elements at the top of the sculpture “represent the fins in a frozen and eternalized movement. Where existing and ceasing to exist meet, coexisting here and being part of the same universe».

The piece was installed at the “Prainha” viewpoint (next to the fishermen's ramp) in Praia and Vila da Luz, “also with the objective of improving the public space”, highlights the Câmara de LAgos.

“The installation was accompanied by relatives and by the group of close friends of Matthias Sandeck who insisted on witnessing the moment”, concludes the municipality.
