AMAL signs protocol for joint management of the Atlantic Coast Route

Portugal wants to become a cycling destination

The Algarve Intermunicipal Community – AMAL will sign a Collaboration Protocol, with 21 other regional and national entities, to ensure the concerted management of the Atlantic Coast Route – EuroVelo 1.

The decision was taken unanimously at an extraordinary meeting of the Intermunicipal Council, which took place yesterday, March 31. The objective «is to respond to the needs of management, enhancement and promotion of one of the anchor routes of the Portuguese Trails, which crosses the territory national along the continental coast, being, therefore, part of the EuroVelo European network and an unavoidable itinerary for the international positioning of Portugal as a Cycling destination», highlights AMAL.

Through this protocol, the association of municipalities in the Algarve, in conjunction with the municipalities that comprise it, is responsible for «committing itself to monitoring the management of the Route, in terms of its maintenance and monitoring, aiming at the safety of users, as well as collaborating in initiatives that enhance the offer of Cycling in the territories, within the scope of Portuguese Trails».

The Portuguese Trails project, launched in 2017 by Turismo de Portugal, within the scope of the 2027 Tourism Strategy, «aims to position Portugal as an international Cycling and Walking destination, in a logic of diversifying the offer, increasing tourist flows throughout the national territory throughout the year and capture new international markets».

AMAL, in partnership with the Algarve Tourism Region, was part of the European cooperation project Atlantic On Bike from 2017 to 2020, which included entities from the 6 countries covered by the EuroVelo1 Route, being the only representatives of Portugal.

Among the various regional and national entities involved in the Protocol are other Intermunicipal Communities; Tourism Regions; Tourism of Portugal, IP; Portuguese Federation of Cycle Tourism and Bicycle Users; Infrastructures of Portugal; Tourism Associations; and Regional Associations for Tourism Promotion.

On the next 14th and 15th of April, Turismo de Portugal and the Portuguese Federation of Cycle Tourism and Bicycle Users (FPCUB) will promote the 1st Meeting of Partners of the Atlantic Coast Route – Eurovelo 1, in online format, where the highlight will be the signing of this Collaboration Protocol.

The webinar addresses various topics with guest speakers and also includes the presence of the Secretary of State for Tourism, Rita Marques, and the President of Tourism of Portugal, Luís Araújo.

The webinar is open to all interested parties through this link. The program can be consulted here.
