The Municipality of Albufeira will celebrate the 47th anniversary of the 25th of April with several initiatives, including a digital conference, which will have teacher Maria João Raminhos Duarte as a speaker, on the 23rd of April, at 14 pm, and an online concert, a commemoration “Zeca Afonso”, by Pedro Jóia, on the 00th, at 24 pm.
The commemorations of Freedom Day, by the municipality of Albufeira, will start on the 23rd of April, with a conference entitled “Resistance in the feminine: art and narrative of the Algarve insurgents”, which will have as speaker the researcher Maria João Raminhos Duarte, from the Institute of Contemporary History/Faculty of Social and Human Sciences, Universidade Nova de Lisboa.
Starting at 14 pm, the conference, held online, will “remember the Algarvian women who opposed the dictatorial regime and who for some time were forgotten and were in the shadow of History, despite having been the target of arrest, persecution and torture , in addition to having played a fundamental role in making democracy a reality».
José Carlos Rolo, mayor of Albufeira, highlighted that it was «thanks to this moment in history that the Democratic Local Power was established in our country, which allows everyone to have a voice, to play an active role without discrimination and without fear, which was the keynote of a time in which I lived».
The mayor hopes that the young people, fundamentally, “follow the conference and reflect on the symbolic value of the ceremonies, as they did not live in a time that is impossible for them to know, but they must listen carefully so that their freedom to be and to be thinking, social rights and the possibility of dreaming».
On the night of April 24, there will be a commemorative show, broadcast online, entitled “Zeca Afonso”, by musician Pedro Jóia, from the Municipal Auditorium of Albufeira.
On the 25th, the ceremonies will start at 9:30 am, in front of the Paços do Concelho, with the raising of the flag with honor guard by the Albufeira Voluntary Firemen, to the sound of the national anthem, performed by the Banda da Sociedade Musical e Recreio Popular de Paderne.
Ferreiras' V Duathlon returns to the road with reinforced safety, circulation and surveillance measures. The competition, which is part of the Algarve Duathlon Championship, will start at 10:30 am on the 25th of April, next to the Nora stadium.
This year, the celebrations of this symbolic date will have "a different, smaller format, favoring digital initiatives, in order to avoid the gathering of people", concludes the municipality, in a press release.
