The Portugal Masters of golf, which was due to take place from April 29th to May 2nd in Vilamoura, was postponed due to travel limitations caused by the covid-19 pandemic, announced this Friday, March 19th, the European Tour.

“Everyone associated with the tournament, both in Portugal and on the European Tour, worked hard to make the event that has been an important part of our calendar since 2007. Unfortunately, it was simply not possible to organize the event next month, so now we are to look into the possibility of rescheduling it at some point later this year,” said European circuit executive director Keith Pelley.

Thus, the date set for the Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course will be assumed by the Open de Tenerife, which moves from its original date of 15th to 18th of April, for which the European Tour is still looking for an alternative event in Europe.

«We are obviously disappointed with the ongoing challenges of international travel that led to the postponement of the Portugal Masters», he added, without giving any alternative date to the Portuguese competition.

The official argues that the change of date for the Open de Tenerife, which will take place the week after the Open de Gran Canaria “make it easy to travel around continental Europe before the French Open”.

"We're also trying to run a replacement event elsewhere in Europe so that between 15 and 18 April we can give our members a full schedule and play opportunities," he concluded.

The Portuguese race had been brought forward to spring, recovering cash prizes of 1,5 million euros.
