Sneakers: Faro Open runs out of Portuguese in singles, Mischa Zverev moves on

Gonçalo Falcão is still competing in pairs

This Thursday, March 4, tennis player Mischa Zverev qualified for the quarter finals of the Faro Open, but Pedro Araújo was eventually eliminated. The tournament no longer has Portuguese in the singles.

Passing through the Algarve capital on his way to Acapulco, the oldest of the Zverev brothers got away from the Turkish Kuzey Cekirge (1322.º), executioner of the Portuguese Tiago Cação in the previous round, winning 6-4 and 7-5, later of 1:46 am.

Unlike what happened the day before, Mischa Zverev showed a better adaptation to the court main of the Tennis Center of Faro and managed to avoid a third game, despite the opponent having raised the level and twice canceled the delay break.

In the quarter-finals, the former top 25 ATP will face another player who started the week in qualifying: Austria's Maximilian Neuchrist (655th).

Hours earlier, the Frenchman Dan Added (396.º) put an end to the Portuguese representation in singles, by defeating the national under-18 champion, Pedro Araujo (1326.º), by 7-6(5) and 6- 2, after 1:53 am.

Looking for the second consecutive "quarters" in international tournaments, the Tennis School player Jaime Caldeira presented an offensive tennis and managed to turn a disadvantage of 1-5 into 6-5, even having a set point in the Frenchman's service, but the experience of the opponent ended up speaking louder and, after 78 minutes, Added grabbed a partial that proved decisive for the outcome of the match.

In pairs, and as in the previous week, in Vale do Lobo, it is Gonçalo Falcão who “holds” the Portuguese flag in this edition of Faro Open.

Alongside Turkey's Tuna Altuna, the 33-year-old from Spain defeated the French Ronan Joncour and Arthur Reymond, 6-1 and 6-3, to confirm his status as the second seed and advance to the semi-finals.

Less luck had the 100% Portuguese duo made up of Frederico Gil and Fábio Coelho who, despite the good start, conceded 3-6, 6-3 and 10-8 to the French team formed by Dan Added and Hugo Voljacques.

Celebrating the 30th edition, the Faro Open is the longest-running international tournament in Portugal. This year, due to the pandemic, it is carried out “behind closed doors” and in accordance with all the norms of the General Directorate of Health.
