The Academic Association of the University of Algarve (AAUAlg) is preparing to hold the Bênção das Pastas in May, if the pandemic allows. This is a way for AAUAlg to try to get around the fact that it cannot hold, for the second consecutive year, the Academic Week.

Ao Sul Informação, Vítor Pereira, who took office as the new leader of AAUAlg on the 3rd of March, explained that the realization of the Bênção das Pastas is something that «is being prepared» by the Association.

For the time being, there is still no green light, but the goal is to hold an event that complies with all health rules and that can "be open to both final year students and last year's students who were unable to have this ceremony." he said.

What is certain is that this year, for the second year in a row, there will be no Academic Week due to the “current epidemiological situation”.

Despite the cancellation of this initiative, the new direction of the Academic Association has a outlined plan: «our idea is to hold, in October, a Reception for Caloiro Major. It's our will, but we don't know if it will be possible».

After the departure of Raquel Jacob, Vitor Pereira became president of AAUAlg, in an election in which there was only one voting list and which took place online.

In statements to the Sul Informação, the Computer Engineering student, who belonged to AAUAlg in previous directions, such as Pedro Ornelas, explained that he decided to apply because he saw that the Academic Association “needed someone who knew it”.

In addition to investing in areas such as "better communication with students", one of the areas of intervention will be "financial sustainability, a key point on which we are working", according to the new president.

Added to this are initiatives such as the creation of two online competitions (one for the exhibition of student works and the other for video and photography), the increase in the variety of events, focusing on areas such as comedy, and a talent competition , the “UAlg Got Talent”.

With regard to employability and entrepreneurship, Vítor Pereira's management wants to bet on lectures and workshops, looking, for example, at the molds of the “TED Talks” and strengthening the connection with CRIA – UAlg's Technology and Entrepreneurship Division and UAlg's Alumni Office.

Finally, in the area of social action, the objective is to continue the process of awarding scholarships, by the AAUAlg, to hold a solidary book fair and to «strive for an extension of the opening hours of bars» .
