A fire destroyed completely, on Tuesday night, the restaurant Estaminé, on Deserta island, in Faro. The restaurant, which is the only one on that island of Ria Formosa, was under construction.

The fire, which was visible from Faro and Olhão, a few kilometers away, was fought by five elements of the Firefighters Sapadores from Faro, supported by elements of the Maritime Police.

The alert was received at around 22:45, through the restaurant owner, who was warned by a fisherman that his restaurant was on fire, who alerted the authorities.

According to what was possible to find out from the owner, the restaurant was empty, so there will be no victims to register.

After the alert, the Captain of the Port of Faro immediately mobilized to the site «three Maritime Police vessels, with elements of the Firefighters Sapadores de Faro to fight the fire”.

In combating the flames, motor pumps were used to draw water from the Ria Formosa, in order to put out the fire. Still, since it was an entirely wooden construction, little or nothing could be done to save the structure.

The restaurant where the fire broke out had three gas canisters inside, which, according to the Maritime Authority, "have burst". On the neighboring island of Farol, moreover, explosions were heard, probably those caused by the bursting of gas cylinders.

The causes of the fire are yet to be determined. However, the Judiciary Police will take care of the case, as there may be reason to suspect arson.

The City Council of Faro, in a note published on his Facebook, said he had followed "with concern the news of the fire" that broke out in Ilha Deserta.

The municipality confirms that "there are no injured people to mourn, even though the damage is profound, in an establishment that is the only one on the island and one of the most prestigious in the region."
