Faro extends free access to medicines to 400 residents

Protocol was signed in 2019 with Associação Dignitude and is now extended

The Chamber of Faro expanded the “Programa Abem – Solidary Medicine Network” from 250 to 400 beneficiaries, allowing more citizens to have free access to medicines. 

After being associated with this project in 2019, through a protocol signed with Associação Dignitude, enabling 100 residents to benefit from this support, the Municipality of Faro In 2020, the number of recipients of “Abem” cards increased to up to 250 citizens, who were thus able to have access, 100% free of charge, at participating pharmacies, to medicines subject to medical prescription and reimbursed by the National Health Service.

Now the number increases to 400 beneficiaries.

So far, this program has already helped 280 residents of the municipality, who have thus saved more than 40 euros in medicines.

In a press release, the Chamber of Faro explains that, "in view of the effects of the crisis caused by the pandemic, the search for support, namely in terms of health care and the acquisition of medicines, is in a growing phase, and it is urgent to guarantee the support and implementation of measures aimed at social inclusion and of individuals and families in need”.

In this sense, the Autarchy decided to “broaden” the protocol signed with Associação Dignitude, with social assistance continuing, in the coming months, to refer candidates to beneficiaries of the “Abem Program”.

The Municipality identifies and socioeconomically assesses the households that are indicated, when eligible, to Associação Dignitude, for subsequent issuance of beneficiary cards.
