Covid-19: PSP and GNR detained 911 people during a pandemic year

The PSP and the GNR detained 911 people, 303 of which for disobedience to mandatory confinement, and closed 3882 establishments since the beginning of the pandemic, in March 2020, according to data from the Ministry of Internal Administration (MAI).

The data were sent to Lusa news agency when it marks a year in which the country entered a state of emergency to fight the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to the MAI, the 911 arrests by the PSP and GNR were made between March 19, 2020 and March 15 this year.

MAI data also reveal that the National Republican Guard and the Public Security Police applied, between June 27, 2020 and March 15 this year, 38.825 administrative offenses, 32.662 (about 84%) of which since January 15, when the country entered the second confinement.

The records have been registered since the 27th of June of last year because that was when the decree-law that establishes the regime of administrative offenses to deal with the pandemic came into force.

According to the MAI, most administrative offenses are related to breaches of the general duty of home collection (20.362) and limitation of circulation between municipalities (4984).

The security forces also counted 3402 administrative offenses for alcohol consumption in the street, 2841 for not using a mask in the street and public spaces, 1123 for non-compliance with opening hours and 1020 for non-compliance with the mandatory use of a mask in concert halls or public establishments .

Records were also filed for breaches of the mandatory use of masks in public transport (785), the rules of occupation, permanence and physical distance in places open to the public (687), the holding of celebrations and other events (509), the rules the sale of alcoholic beverages (460) and the operating rules of restaurants and similar (552).

There are also 56 fines recorded for refusing to perform the SARS-CoV-2 test.

In addition to having closed 3882 establishments between March 19, 2020 and March 15 this year, these two security forces have suspended the activity of 243.

Since the beginning of the pandemic in Portugal, in March 2020, 13 states of emergency have already been decreed, and, between May and November 2020, three calamity situations, another three contingency and two alert, some of them in just a few. regions.

In the first three states of emergency and which corresponded to the first confinement, until 2 May 2020, 125 people were arrested for disobedience to compulsory confinement and 2418 establishments closed.

Since January 15 of this year, when the second confinement began and the highest number of deaths and daily cases of Covid-19 were registered, 248 people were arrested for non-compliance with mandatory confinement and 465 establishments closed, with the period of state of emergency between February 15th and March 1st the one with the highest number of arrests (172).
