The Covid-19 outbreak that is affecting the Vila Real de Santo António Fire Department registers 12 workers infected by Covid-19. Of the 72 firefighters in the corporation, there are still another 38 in prophylactic isolation, as determined by the health delegate in that municipality.

Faced with this situation, the Regional Emergency and Civil Protection Command of the Algarve reinforced the provision in the municipalities of VRSA and Castro Marim, served by that fire department, with elements from other municipalities. The INEM service will also be provided by external operators.

In a note sent to the newsrooms, the direction of the Humanitarian Association of Firefighters of Vila Real de Santo António assures that "the response to possible emergency situations, protection and assistance remains guaranteed", in those two municipalities of Sotavento.

On the other hand, to "ensure the restoration of normality", in the beginning of this afternoon, the "quarter decontamination" will be carried out, in charge of the intervention group in biological risk/Covid-19, of the firemen of the Algarve, mobilized by the Regional Command. The barracks is currently closed.

The direction of the Humanitarian Association also says that the first case of Covid-19 among the firefighters from Vila Real was detected on January 31st. It was a firefighter who was off duty, but who, having felt suspicious symptoms, went to the health services, where he was tested, having immediately warned those responsible for the corporation.

At that time, “the second phase of the internal contingency plan was immediately activated”, to “early stop the contagion chain” and maintain the capacity to respond. The entire situation was, "from the first moment, monitored by the Health Authority."

From the 31st of January until yesterday, the 6th, according to regional data, 88 new cases of Covid-19 were registered in the municipality of Vila Real de Santo António.

In the neighboring municipality of Castro Marim, served by the same fire brigade, in a week there were 26 more infections. More data on the current situation can be found at interactive map of Sul Informação, clicking here.
