Monchique invests 150 euros in 47 scholarships

Student support extends for 10 months

Monchique City Council awarded 47 higher education scholarships for the 2020/2021 academic year. The measure, approved at a Chamber meeting, on February 23, represents an investment of almost 150 thousand euros.

In a note sent to the newsrooms, the Monchique Council explains that, «with this measure, the municipality intends to help families and promote the
further studies and reward the performance of higher education students'.

Scholarships are awarded to students residing in the municipality who do not have sufficient means to bear the costs inherent in attending higher education.

Over the course of 10 months, "a sum that can be around half the value of the national minimum wage is granted, according to the income of the household", adds the Monchiquense municipality.

Rui André, president of the City Council, emphasizes that, «in the current moment of serious economic and financial crisis that the country is going through,
the support to the most needy families gains an added social importance by facilitating access to essential areas of life».

According to the mayor, in particular, "in education, the economic difficulties that affect some households constitute a serious obstacle to the continuation of studies by young people."

Thus, in a municipality with rural characteristics, «the municipality felt even more the need to respond in the affirmative to the
challenge of supporting and contributing to higher education students via scholarships».
