Lagos has a strategy of 18 million euros to provide a decent home for 399 families

Measure benefits a total of 851 people

The Câmara de Lagos intends to invest more than 18 million euros to find housing solutions for 399 households, with a total of 851 people, within the scope of its Local Housing Strategy, which was approved yesterday.

This document identifies the council's housing needs and the proposed housing solutions, «which represent an investment of approximately 19,2 million euros, with 18 million euros relating to solutions to be implemented by the municipality and 1,2 million euros intended for direct beneficiaries, that is, families with their own and permanent housing, but without the economic conditions to carry out the necessary rehabilitation works», announced the municipality.

The 18 million euros of investment, whose time horizon is six years, will be supported in 11,5 million euros by the municipal budget, with the remaining amount to be guaranteed by the Institute of Housing and Urban Rehabilitation (IHRU), under the Program 1st Law.

The strategy approved by the municipality of Lacobrigense is, moreover, one of the mandatory instruments to have access to this program, which aims to “ensure access to decent housing for people living in conditions of precariousness, unhealthy conditions and insecurity, overcrowding or inadequacy, and who do not have the financial capacity to access an adequate housing solution”.

«Based on housing requests registered with the City Council, on the homeless population identified by the Social Network of Lagos and on the survey of municipal housing in need of repairs, the diagnosis revealed that there is a universe of 399 households (corresponding to 851 people) living in undignified conditions and, as such, eligible for support under the 1st Law Programme”, added the City of Lagos.

The situations of greatest need are linked to “homeless people, victims of domestic violence, families with an eviction order, lawsuits and situations of sharing or giving up housing with/from family and friends. 198 aggregates are in this condition».

"With a similar weight (176 situations) appear the households living in unhealthy and insecure conditions due to the state of degradation of the housing, being also considered in this criterion households living in social housing that need repairs", said the autarchy.

There are also situations of overcrowding (20 households) and inadequate (5 households).

As for the proposed housing solutions, they are distinct, “because they take into account the specificity of the situations”.,

The first line of priorities is the construction of new leased ventures (which will respond to 153 households), the rehabilitation of municipal dwellings (benefiting a population of 148 households), the rehabilitation of a property for the installation of a Temporary Reception Center (preferential response for the homeless population) and the rehabilitation of permanent housing (a support line for direct beneficiaries that will respond to 60 households).

«The second and third priorities are the construction of a residential unit for cohousing (with capacity for ten households) and the possibility of renting dwellings for sub-letting (which will be the solution for eight families)», concluded the Lacobrigense municipality.
