January was the month with the most deaths in the last 12 years

January 2021 was the month with the highest number of deaths in the last 12 years, with 19.452 deaths and almost every day new highs were hit, according to data from the Death Certificates Information System (SICO).

These data show that January 2021 was also the one with more deaths compared to every January since 2009.

SICO, which only includes data from the last 12 years, shows that January 20, 2021 was the day when more people died, from all causes - 746 deaths - a figure that exceeded the highest recorded by more than 50%. on the same day since 2009 (486).

According to data available from SICO, the 20th of January with the fewest deaths was in 2010 (312) and the one with the highest number was in 2015 (486).

This year, on January 20th, nearly twice as many people died on the same day of the previous year (375).

Excluding the first four days of the month, the maximum number of deaths recorded on each day of the same month in the last 12 years was exceeded in all others.

According to the same data, since 2009 there had not been a single day in January when more than 500 people died. This year, since the 5th, inclusive, that more than 520 per day have died.

If the day with the most deaths from all causes was 20, the one on which fewer people died was January 2, with 426 deaths, still the highest value in the last three years for the same day.

As for the deaths considered “in excess” by the health authorities, in relation to what was expected, the data from SICO show that in the last week of the month alone there were more than 2.560.

In the worst month of the pandemic, deaths from Covid-19 accounted for about 28% of January deaths.

Regarding the “type of death”, data from SICO show that, in January, the majority (90,3%, 17.068) was considered natural, 9% (1.709) was subject to investigation and 0,6% (114) it was due to external causes.

Regarding the place of death, the majority, 12.048, occurred in health institutions, 4.197 at home, 2.580 elsewhere and in 68 cases the place of death is unknown.
