Castro Marim creates “Local Housing for Birds” with 35 nest boxes

Boxes were installed in Castro Marim and Altura

The Chamber of Castro Marim installed 35 nest boxes in the municipality, under a protocol signed with Associação Vita Nativa, in a “Local Accommodation for Birds” project.

The objective of this project, also in collaboration with the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests, explains the municipality, «is to promote the diversity of avifauna throughout the Algarve region, demonstrating all the benefits that the establishment of species. target they contribute to society and its well-being'.

The Chamber of Castro Marim hopes that “now that these nest boxes, installed between Castro Marim and Altura, house small species of insectivorous birds, such as titmice and hoopoes, as well as small and medium-sized prey species, such as the owl -Galician, the Barn Owl and the Common Kestrel».

Nest structures were also installed in municipal buildings and in the Castro Marim Schools Group, which hosted this project, and with which, according to Castro Marim, «it is intended, in the future, to develop awareness-raising and environmental education activities that pass through the monitoring of the nests and for the deepening of knowledge about the sheltered species».

Also with the same objective, as early as March 2019, around 100 children and young people from the Easter Active Vacation had participated in actions to install nest boxes.

The Chamber of Castro Marim emphasizes that «this is a very important contribution to the biological control of species susceptible to urban pests, such as the pine caterpillar and rodent species. This initiative also plays a fundamental role in the balance. of ecosystems'.
